Research Components:
1. The area (geography, vegetation, topography, etc.) around where Brian was traveling and where he crashed. Tell me what trees he may have seen, what vegetation he may have encountered (plants), were there hills, mountains, flatlands, etc. Are there any plants that are edible in this region? This component must contain a map of some kind among the visuals. What would be the nearest city? Remember Brian left from a town called Hampton, New York and was flying northwest to the tundra. When the pilot died he jerked the plane right (east) and Brian flew another 600 or so kilometers - this probably put him about 500 km north of Quebec. Or you can google it and search on your own. :)
2. The climate and weather patterns where Brian would have crashed (read the reminders in part one for help). Tell me what sort of weather and temperatures Brian would have experienced landing there in the summer and what he should expect if he stays for fall, winter and spring. What kinds of storms or natural disasters should he be wary of?

3. The animals and wildlife Brian might encounter in the woods of Northern Canada. Be sure to include (at minimum) the moose, the porcupine, the beaver and the bear. Be as specific as possible - which of these animals could Brian potentially eat for food? Which animals should he be wary of and/or prepared to defend himself against? Are any of these animals traditionally used for fur (blankets, coats, hats)? Again, be regionally specific and find as many details as you can. Also, in your assessment of Brian's response to these animals, keep in mind that his only weapon is a hatchet!

4. Basic survival skills. Brian is alone in the wilderness with only a hatchet and the clothes on his back. What skills and information does he need to survive? He will need food, water, shelter, protection and eventually, fire. A good starting point is to research the acronym S.U.R.V.I.V.A.L as it has been written by the Navy SEALS. You may do any additional research and make your information to Brian specific to the circumstances; don't forget the mosquitoes!
